External Review of the MA in CTE Program

MA in CTE Program: Kudos!
The program faculty in Career and Workforce Education at USF are pleased to report that an external review of the Master of Arts in Career and Technical Education was conducted in April-May 2016 and the overall results were positive. The external review was based on an analysis of information available on the College and Program Web sites, materials provided by the program, and the reviewer’s knowledge of the program and the field of CTE in general. Below are the key findings of the external review:
  • The USF Program is highly commended for evolving previously from a traditional, decentralized jobs-based program to the current focus on interdisciplinary Career and Technical Education and, more specifically, career pathways (e.g., STEM) and academies. This change is consistent with national trends, Federal legislation and initiatives, and local educational programming; it enables the Program to be highly responsive to the workforce education needs of a variety of target populations in various contexts. Accordingly, the Program can more effectively respond to the diverse professional and leadership development needs of public and private sector practitioners.
  • The College and the Program maintain quality outcomes assessment data and information essential to the formative and summative evaluation of the Master’s Degree Program in Career and Technical Education. The Program faculty has effectively used previous review recommendations such as clarifying expectations and artifacts for the electronic portfolio, and examination of and revisions to the content and sequence of the (courses) curriculum. Further, the faculty appropriately and effectively applies the data from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) Assessment Report for program improvement, planning, student learning, and decision-making.
  • The program 's curriculum is well organized and described around a theoretically sound conceptual framework. The emphasis is on program improvement related to curriculum, instruction, and leadership.
  • The faculty members are highly productive and visible in teaching, research, and service and are published in the premier, refereed research journals in the field of CTE. Program faculty members have also been involved in producing grant proposals and working with colleagues in other fields in an interdisciplinary, collaborative manner.
  • Program faculty sponsors the editorial office for a top journal in CTE, the Journal of Career and Technical Education. The Program and its faculty are held in very high professional regard by peers for their contributions to the field of CTE.
  • The Program faculty use assessment data effectively to improve student learning, develop and revise curriculum, and select and revise instructional strategies.
All in all, the results of the external review were positive and appreciated. The recommendations for improvement, in particular, should provide further opportunities for enhancing the program’s design, implementation, and student experiences.
