Johanna Lasonen

Dr. Lasonen comes to program all the way from Finland. She holds two doctoral degrees, one in Vocational and Technical Education from Virginia Tech and the other in Educational Sciences from the University of  Jyvaskyla, in Finland.

Her most recent position was as a Senior researcher at the Finnish Institute for Educational Research at the Univeristy of Jyvaskyla. Prior to that she was the UNESCO Chair and Professor in Intercultural Education.

Dr. Lasonen’s research focuses on intercultural understanding and immigrant integration into the workplace with a special emphasis on gender and equity issues, specifically womens’ equity and access to education. She has an extensive record of scholarly publications including twelve books and over fifty refereed articles. She has also been the recipient of numerous grants from the European Union, the National Academy of Finland and the World Bank. Additionally, Dr. Lasonen has been the recipient of numerous professional awards including the prestigious United Nations’ Dag Hammarskjod Medal for the promotion of peace.
